Integration of CFD modelling in multi-level process simulation


Computer Simulation Technology research team at VTT studies and develops software platforms related to the application of computational methods in industry. The mission is to accelerate the deployment of modelling and simulation. One main product of the team is large scale process simulation software called Apros. Currently a new operating environment for different simulation tools is developed. This open source platform is called Simantics.

Also Apros version 6 will be released on top of this new platform Simultaneously with the Simantics development VTT has launched research projects that are studing the integration of CFD-solvers to the same environment with the large scale process simulation solvers. Simantics is based on semantics information representation. This makes integration task challenging, but it has many potential benefits. There are no current references on expressing CFD-definitons and result information using semantic (compare semantic web/ RDF) ontologies.

Another field in Simantics development is the integration of OpenModelica compiler to the environment. VTT has launched together with 24 European partners a 3 year project for the further development of the compiler and for the integration to the Simantics. There are also other Ercim institutes involved with this development e,g, Fraunhofer and INRIA.

Dr. Gayer has a background in software development of CFD-computation environments. He has strong practical programming skills that are needed when prototyping different possible approaches for the implementation. His tasks during the fellowship will deal with CFD integration to Simantics and Apros6. Especially the representation of CFD definitions and result information in semantic format will be studied. Also practical prototyping with open source solvers like OpenFoam and commercial solvers like Fluent will be done. Another field of research will be the development of 3D annotations to Modelica language. This will be also the area around which the visits to the other institues will be arranged. The fellow’s duties will be restricted to the research programme outlined here and he will not be called upon to undertake other tasks.
